To meet and exceed the critical quality requirements required in steel production, a major Midwest steel supplier needed an immediate upgrade to its galvanizing line. The existing cleaning section had reached its useful life and required a complete retrofit. Superior Engineering (S/E) was selected to provide engineering and installation services, including construction assistance and start-up services. The project was completed over a 1-year duration, culminating in a planned 10-day, 24/7 system outage. Safety and quality were a focus throughout the project duration.
The major challenge for this project was meeting an accelerated schedule that would dovetail into a planned maintenance outage for the production line itself. S/E followed a stage-gated process to assure that timelines, costs and system performance was tracking per established project metrics & milestones. Critical design considerations included equipment spacing and layout, piping design for major equipment interfaces and equipment access requirements. The electrolytic cleaning process included as part of the galvanizing system upgrade also required specific knowledge & expertise in electrical design and detail engineering. S/E provided approximately 90 installation drawings for interconnecting piping, electrical feeds, structural modifications, and the fabrication and support steel for the new equipment. The galvanizing line, along with the new cleaning section, is currently in full production.
