When a major Midwest steel producer required an upgrade to their hot strip mill, Superior Engineering (S/E) was able to safely and effectively implement a solution. To increase capability and efficiency, the DC motors and drives would be upgraded to an AC system. This task was to be completed within (7) days to minimize service interruptions and downtime.
The project began with comprehensive 3D laser scans of the affected mill areas, and included equipment specification & design reviews, thorough scheduling and preparation of official drawings, and construction RFI support. After that phase was complete, S/E then provided full multi-discipline installation engineering services and project management support, along with documentation for interconnecting wiring, and cooling water piping for the new AC motors and drives. As the project progressed, other services S/E supplied were engineered lift plans, and transformer replacement design including preparation of operations and maintenance manuals. All contractor/supplier logistic issues were also addressed with personnel safety at the forefront.
The motors and drives were successfully replaced without any unplanned down time. Due to the success of this project, the replacement program has been expanded to other departments, as the client is now working to upgrade the remaining motors and drives throughout the plant.
