Superior Engineering (S/E) recently provided engineering services for the design and installation of an auxiliary boiler needed to support the gas conversion project for an operating power plant (the plant previously used coal for its primary fuel source). The client is a major energy provider, owning one of the nation’s largest and most diverse power generation portfolios.
S/E was part of a select team assembled to provide this ground-up installation - on a site previously utilized as a parking area. The project scope included a new boiler, ancillary equipment, a large building enclosure, a pipe bridge over a major waterway and all related engineering services including process, civil, structural, power feed and supply, along with instrument control. This new boiler system had to be integrated into the existing facility’s distribution network as well. Team members included S/E, the general and all installation contractors, manufacturing vendors and the client.
Due to tight equipment delivery schedules and previously negotiated commitments for projected power demand, close coordination and communication between the various teams was critical. Project planning, schedule control and expedited deliveries were paramount. Numerous barriers were encountered during this fast track project, requiring unique engineering and construction solutions. All parties rose to the occasion with demonstrated leadership and a “never give up” attitude, which endured throughout the life of the project.
While the project required typical foundation and building engineering design, it also included mechanical and piping requirements that spanned hundreds of feet across a major waterway. Rigorous stress analysis and provisions for handling the growth of piping systems were used extensively.
By focusing on safety first and through teamwork, collaboration, and a keen attention to detail, S/E was able to guide this effort to successful project completion.
